Butterflies
Group Description
How many Butterflies does the UK hold? That's a very tricky to answer question. Currently the UK has 58 resident species and another 2 common migrants (Painted Lady and Clouded Yellow). Although 83 naturally occuring species have ever been recorded in Britain (66 resident, 2 common migrants and 17 rare migrants). If you include exotic species-escapees-human related then plus another 35 so 118 species of Butterfly have ever been recorded in Britain. 7 have gone extinct in the last 150 years so there used to be 66 (64 resident, 2 common migrants and 17 rare migrants). Although 1 has been successfully reintroduced and another is now a rare migrant so that brings the Talley up to 60 species (58 resident, 2 common migrants and 18 other rare migrants including the Monarch). Overall the UK has 60 commonly seen butterflies.
Butterflies of Bristol. Butterflies have been recorded by Bristolians for over 200 years. Over that time frame, 63 species of butterfly have been recorded in Greater Bristol. (Bristol City: -5)
