Species Description
Common and widespread throughout the UK but mainly in the South. Habitat includes: Grassy places where vegetation isn't too long so that sunlight can reach the soil such as rough grassland, gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards, wasteland etc. Length: Workers = 2 - 3.5 mm, Queen = 7 - 9 mm. Life Story: Lives in social colonies by building nests or Ant Hills where multiple queens and up to 250,000 workers can exist. Flight period: July to August. Diet: feeds on any invertebrates in the vicinity such as fly larvae, wireworms, woodlice, springtails, aphids (farms them for their honeydew). Other names include: Yellow Hill Ant.
