Species Description
Common and widespread in the Southern half of the UK becoming scattered in the North. Habitat includes: open woodland, woodland edge, heaths, moorland, old quarries etc. Flight period: July to August. Length: Workers = Up to 6 mm. Other names include: Negro Ant. Life story: Nests are usually small, containing 500 - 2,000 workers. The workers are large, at 8 - 10 mm and fast moving.
