Species Description

Common and widespread throughout the UK but absent from much of East and North West England. Habitat includes: Free-draining, moderately basic to acidic soils in places such as scrub, woodland, hedgerows, shaded rocks (rock faces), coasts etc. Deciduous Perennial climber / shrub. Height: Up to 6 m. Flowers: June to October. Other names include: Wood-bind, Common Honeysuckle, European Honeysuckle. Flowers provide for many pollinators such as Moths (including Hummingbird Hawk-moths which can detect the scent from a quarter of a mile away), long-tongued Bees and small mammals. Berries for birds such as Thrushes, Bull Finches and Warblers, bark for Dormice which use it for nesting material and the canopy for nesting birds.
