Species Description
Fairly common and widespread throughout England, Wales but scarce in Scotland and Ireland. Habitat includes: gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards, open woodland, grassland, coast etc. Flight period: Late May to September. Diet: Adults = Pollen and Nectar from a wide variety of flowers (Polylectic) including Apiaceae, Asteraceae, Boraginaceae, Brassicaceae, Campanulaceae, Crassulaceae, Lamiaceae, Liliaceae, Lythraceae, Resedaceae (I have noted it on Bristol Onion). Life story: cavity-nester, using existing burrows of a suitable diameter e.g. dead wood (old beetle burrows), woody stems (Bramble), soil, crevices in mortar joints in walls etc. Parasites: Sapyga quinquepunctata, Hylaeus communis, Gasteruption jaculator, Coelopencyrtus.
