Species Description

Widespread but local throughout the South up until the Northern edge of East Anglia. Habitat includes: chalk / limestone grassland, quarries, wasteland, coastal dunes, coastal shingle, soft-rock cliffs, fens, open woodland etc. Other names include: Hylaeus annularis (old name). Flight period: Early June to early September. Life story: Nests in hollow plant stems (dead Bramble, Rose, Dock, Mugwort, Rotten fence posts have been recorded but they probably use a wide range of plant species and other woody materials). Diet: Adults = Pollen from members of Apiaceae, Asteraceae, Boraginaceae, Brassicaceae, Campanulaceae, Crassulaceae, Rosaceae, Lamiaceae, Nectar from Bramble, cinquefoil's, Common Fleabane, Creeping Thistle, Field Bindweed, Common Hogweed, Pale Toadflax, Sea Spurge, Wild Carrot, Yarrow. Parasites: Gasteruption assectator.
