Species Description
Widespread and locally frequent throughout England and Wales but mainly in the South. Habitat includes: gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards, field margins, roadside verges, railway banks, scrub, hedgerows, woodland, wasteland etc. Flight period: June to August (sometimes May and September, rarely April). Prey item: Lepidoptera (Butterfly and Moths) and chrysomelidae (Leaf Beetles) larvae. Nectars on Sea-holly, Bramble, Common Hogweed and Thistles (I've also recorded Red Clover).
