Species Description
Widespread and fairly common throughout the UK but declining. Habitat includes: gardens, parks, allotments, cemeteries, woodland rides, hedgerows, meadows, scrub, coast, road side verges etc. Anywhere with flowers. Length: Queen= 19-20mm, Worker= 11-17mm, Male= 14-16mm. Life cycle: They nest in the ground, often using old mouse/vole nest. Males emerge in August. They have short tongues so in order to get to long tubular flowers such as Fox gloves they cheat. They nipple a hole in the top nearest to the nectar source to feed.
