Species Description
Common and widespread throughout he UK. Habitat includes: gardens, allotments, parks, cemeteries, scrub, woodland rides, hedgerows. Length: Queen= 17-20mm, Workers= 11-16mm, Male= 14-15mm. Flight period: April to early October. Life history: Nests are made underground in banks and among tree roots though sometimes uses bird boxes. Colonies can contain 50-120 individuals. Lifespan: 14 weeks.
