Species Description
Widespread throughout the UK, mainly in England but rare. Habitat includes: woodland, orchards, hedgerows, riversides, chalk pits, grassland, wasteland, it is also sometimes grown in gardens. Populations can arise from discarded bulbs, deliberate planting in the wild or as relics of cultivation. Plants often flower poorly and set little seed, but populations can be very long-lived. It was cultivated in Britain by 1596 and was recorded from the wild by 1790. It was widely naturalised by the late 18th and 19th centuries but declined in the 20th century.
