Species Description

Scattered throughout the lowlands of the UK. Habitat includes: Rough places, wasteland etc. It grows in the Great Quarry / Tennis Court Quarry where it was quite common in one spot and also Lawrence Weston. Other names include: Prickly Comfrey. It was introduced to Britain in 1799 and was quite widely grown as an ornamental in the 19th and early 20th centuries, sometimes escaping or outcast from cultivation. It was recorded from the wild by 1862 (N. Essex). Native to Asia (N.E. Turkey, the Caucasus and N. Iran). Chromosomes: 2n=36 cytotype of S. X uplandicum.
