Species Description
Widespread but uncommon and mainly in the South. In the North it is scattered and rare. It is often planted and escapes from gardens, making it impossible to work out its native range. Habitat includes: Shallow calcareous soils in places such as woodland glades, open scrub, scree slopes, rock ledges, hedge banks, churchyards etc. Growing habit: Short-lived Perennial. Height: Up to 80 cm. Flowers: January to April. Chromosomes: 2n=32. ID: Foliage is pungent when crushed. Other names include: Dung-wort, Setter-wort, Bear's-foot.
