Species Description
Common and widespread throughout England and Wales, becoming scarce and local in Scotland. Habitat includes: Damp, disturbed, slightly shady places such as gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards, roadside verges, railway banks, wasteland, pavements (at the base of walls), woodland, hedgebanks etc.

Ssp. tetragonum.
Leaves sessile, slightly decurrent on to stem-ridges; 2n=36. Native; hedgerows, open woods, by water, cultivated and waste ground; locally common in Channel Islands, South & Central Britain, Isle of Man, very scattered in Ireland and North Britain.
Key:
- Petals 2.5-7(8.5)mm; stigma borne at same level as anthers; anthers 0.7-1.1(1.3)mm
- Leaves more or less decurrent on to stem-ridges
