Species Description

Widespread and frequent throughout the UK. Habitat includes: Damp grassland, roadside verges, ditches, fens, marshland, river / stream banks, woodland, allotments, parks, gardens, churchyards etc. Flowers: May to July. Growing habit: Perennial. Height: Up to 1.2 m. ID: Has wings from each leaf running down the stem beyond the leaf below (more than 1 internode). Hybrids have decurrent leaves, but moderately or weakly so. The true species has smooth, shining nutlets. Flower colour: rarely white, blue-cream, purplish, striped light / dark purple. Other names include: Comfrey, True Comfrey, English Comfrey, Quaker Comfrey, Cultivated Comfrey, Bone-set, Knit-bone, Con-sound, Slippery-root.
