Species Description

Widespread and fairly frequent throughout the UK but absent from much of the South. Habitat includes: Wet, boggy ground near to water such as by ponds, lakes, rivers, canals, marshes, fens, wet woods, winter-flooded dune-slacks, roadside verges etc. Growing habit: Deciduous Perennial. Height: Up to 14 m. Flowers: May to June. Other names include: Laurel Willow.

Salix pentandra L. - Bay Willow.

Tree to 10(20)m; twigs reddish-brown, glossy, glabrous; leaves 5-12 x 2-5cm, glabrous; stamens (4)5-8(12); 2n=76. Native; wet ground and by ponds and streams; North & Central Britain and Ireland, planted and sometimes more or less wild further South.
