Species Description
Widespread but local in the South. Habitat includes: Well-drained, calcareous soils overlying chalk, limestone, clay and sand in places such as open woodland, hedgerows, disused quarries, scrub, coasts etc. Growing habit: Deciduous Shrub. Height: Up to 4 m. Flowers: May.

Rosa stylosa Desv. - Short-styled Field-rose.
Stems arching, to 3(4)m, with hooked prickles; leaflets hairy on lowerside, uniserrate, eglandular; flowers 1-several, white to pale pink, 3-5cm across; pedicels 2-4cm, usually glandular-hairy; fruit ovoid, 1-2cm, more or less glabrous; sepals reflexed after flowering, falling before fruit ripe; disc conical, with orifice about 1/5 its total width; styles glabrous, forming a column shorter than stamens but persistent in fruit; 2n=35, 42. Native; hedges, scrub, wood-borders; Britain and Ireland South of a line from County Dublin to East Suffolk, but now rarer than formerly.
