Mendip Tubercled Bramble? - Rubus 'Mendip tuberculatus'?
Favourite Photos
Species Description
An informally named taxon which is widespread throughout North Somerset, much of Wiltshire and the Cotswolds and deserves to be given a proper name. The pictures here may or may not be the same taxon which R.D. Randall named 'Mendip tuberculatus'. The only definite photos can be seen on the link below.
These plants differ from typical R. tuberculatus in having stems which seem to almost completely lack any acicles and the prickles and pricklets are shorter, sturdier and have a much more pronounced bulbous base and the stem turns a brighter more reddish colour rather than browny-red. The leaves are a paler more yellow green, less rugose and flat to almost slightly concave so that the margins are more crisp and clearly visible than typical R. tuberculatus (which is more convex), and the petals appear to be slightly narrower and more patent and almost convex and recurved backwards rather than cupped.
