Species Description

Widespread but local throughout England and Wales spreading further North. Habitat includes: hedgerows, calcareous woodland (Ash), scrub, old quarries etc. Other names include: Privet Sawfly. Length: 7 - 8 mm. Life story: Males are rare indicating that it is mainly parthenogenetic. Diet: Larvae = Wild Privet, Ash, Lilac (all members of the Oleaceae). In North America, where it has been introduced, it can be a pest of cultivated Californian Privet. It doesn't seem to use Garden Privet here. Flight period May to July. Flower visitor?
