Species Description
Common and widespread throughout the UK. Habitat includes: gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards, woodland, hedgerows, scrub, grassland, fens, roadside verges, heathland etc. Flight period: June to August. Life story: Overwinters as a pupa in a silk cocoon under loose bark or in crevices. Caterpillars seen: July to November. Wingspan: 34 - 40 mm. Food plant: Broadleaved trees / shrubs such as Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), Hawthorns, Apples (Malus domestica), Birches, Sweet Chestnut (Castanae sativa), Limes, Elms, Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) etc. I've recorded it on a cultivated climbing rose.
