Species Description

Common and widespread throughout the UK and is increasing its range further North. Habitat includes: gardens, parks, allotments, cemeteries, wasteland, hedgerows, meadows, roadside verges, heathland, grassland, sand-dunes, river banks, woodland clearings. Caterpillar Food plant: various Willow herbs particularly Rosebay willow herb (I've seen it on Great willow herb) and Bedstraw's. Wingspan 45-60 mm. The English name of this moth is derived from the caterpillar's fanciful resemblance to an Elephant's trunk.
