Species Description
Widespread and fairly frequent throughout the Southern half of the UK; scattered in the North. Habitat includes: gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards, hedgerows, scrub, woodland etc. Wingspan: 40 - 52 mm. Life story: Larvae feed on various trees and shrubs but favour Oak. Flight period: August to October.

- Underside of hindwings with light grey outer margin and orange only covering the bottom section (dark grey outer margin and orange throughout the rest in A. svenssoni)
- Overall brown appearance (darker brown almost grey in A. svenssoni)
- Palps are pale throughout (black with white tip in A. svenssoni)
