Species Description
Widespread and locally common in the Southern half of the UK (up to about Yorkshire) it's status is critical and has been put on the red list due to the fact it has declined massively in the S. East and central England. Habitat includes: Places with loose calcareous soil such as open woodland, scrub, coasts etc. Life story digs itself underground (10 cm) during hot, dry periods and winter (hibernation). Diet: dead leaves (prefers dry to wet ones), decaying wood with the help of symbiotic bacteria. Unlike most Mollusks, P. elegans are not hermaphrodites and have separate Male and Female specimens. Length: 15.8 - 12.5 mm. Diameter: 7 - 11.5 mm. Other names include: Land Winkle.
