Species Description

Common and widespread throughout the UK. Habitat includes: Around water sources / wet places e.g. muddy puddles, wet ditches, ponds, sunny situations, roadsides, field margins etc. Flight period: April to November. Flight period: June to August (peaks in July). Life story: Larvae can be found in: ponds, puddles, stagnant water, farmyard drains, very wet manure, and very wet sawdust. Other names include: Tiger Hoverfly, Sun Fly.
