Species Description
Widespread and locally common in Southern England from the Southern coast of Wales to the Wash, rare elsewhere. Habitat includes: grassland, woodland rides, scrub, pathways, hedgerows, wetland margins etc. Flight period: May to September (peaking from late June to early July). Diet: Larvae feed on aphids within the nests of ants (Lasius niger and Lasius flavus). Males hover up to about 50cm above the ground. Wing length: 7 - 9.5 mm.
