Species Description
Widespread and fairly frequent throughout the UK although mainly in the Southern half of the UK. sheltered sunny spots, open flowers particularly Composites such as Oxeye daisies, meadows, woodland-with Blue bells, parks, gardens, allotments, church yards especially due to the array of Bulbs in which their larvae feed on for 300 days before turning into their adult form which will only live for 5-24 days. There are many different variants of this species:Var. bulborum, Var. transversalis, Var. narcissi, Var. validus, Var. equestris. These variants all imitate various bumblebee species. Other names include: Large narcissus fly, Greater Bulb Fly, Large bulb fly.
