Species Description

Common and widespread throughout the UK. Habitat includes: Damp places with a rich variety of spring flowers such as hedgerows, woodland edge etc. Length: Male = 12 mm, Female = 14 mm. Wing length up to 13 mm. Flight period: April to June (peaking in Late April to Early May). Other names include: Hawthorn Fly. Named after St. Marks day on the 25th April when they appear in vast numbers. Diet: Larvae = grass roots, leaf mould / decaying matter, Adult = Nectar / Pollen.
