Species Description
Widespread along coasts throughout the UK, coming inland in England and Ireland. Classed as an Amber species. Habitat includes: Lakes, reservoirs, gravel pits, estuaries, canals etc. Diet: Aquatic plants, grasses, roots. Life story: Small numbers are resident and breed in Scotland and Northern England with numbers being boosted in winter due to migrants from Iceland, Scandinavia and Russia. Measurements: Length = 45 - 51cm, Wingspan = 75 - 86cm, Weight = 500 - 900g. Population: UK breeding = 400 pairs, UK wintering = 440,000 birds. Seen: All year round.
