Species Description
Widespread but local in the southern half of the UK, following a line from Swansea to Hull. Habitat includes: grassland, field margins, track-sides, hedgebanks, woodland rides etc. Life story: the larvae develop in soil infested by the fungus Fairy Ring Champignon (Marasmius oreades) where they feed on its mycelium and pupate in cocooons in the soil. Adults are often found visiting the flowers of Hogweed and Wild Carrot. Length: 5 - 9 mm. Adult seen: May to September.
