Species Description
Common and widespread throughout the UK. Habitat includes: under stones, loose bark, grass tussocks etc in places such as gardens, parks, allotments, arable fields, cemeteries, woodland, meadows, moorland etc. Diet: ground-living invertebrates (caterpillars, slugs), plant material. Life story: breeds in the Autumn - the larvae overwinter. Length: 15-20 mm. Identification: Shiny, Black beetle with either all black legs or red legs (var. concinnus). 2 subspecies: Pterostichus madidus. validus (Black femora), Pterostichus madidus. concinnus (Red femora). Both morphs are often found in the same area.
