Species Description

Common and widespread throughout the UK. Habitat includes: Sandy places such as gardens, parks, coasts, old quarries etc. Other names include: Fly Wolf. Flight period: June to October. Length: 12 mm. Diet: Larvae = Flies (Muscidae, Syrphidae, Tabanidae). Life story: Females construct underground nests in sandy places. In hard soil however the female will often try to steal a nest from another member of the same species. She then stuffs the tunnels with various flies for the larvae to eat.
