Species Description
Widespread and locally common throughout the UK. Habitat includes: gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards, marshland, heathland, moorland, woodland, rough grassland etc. It is Britain's heaviest spider weighing up to 2.25 g. Length: Up to 20 mm. Life story: Webs are constructed in low vegetation usually below 1 m and measuring a diameter of up to 40 cm. The life cycle is complete in one year with adults maturing in summer and autumn. Adult females can change their colour. It takes about three days to take on colours that accurately match their resting surface. Seen: June to October. Diet: Jumping insects such as grasshoppers.
