Species Description

Widespread and fairly frequent throughout England and Wales. Scattered elsewhere. A Non-native which has spread across Europe from Morocco. Introduced to Britain in the 1970s however It was reported in Britain in 1946 and established in Bournemouth as early as 1957, from where it spread. It reached Scotland by 2000. Habitat includes: Around walls and fences, grassland, hedgerows, tree trunks etc. Seen: August to November. Body Length: Males = 4 mm, Females = 6 mm. D. ramosus was regarded as a single species until 2015 when the species was split into two: the old Dicranopalpus ramosus and the new Dicranopalpus caudatus as a result all records before 2015 and any which cannot be confirmed to species level or sensu stricto must be placed as an aggregate or Sensu lato. It is likely that most of the records are that of D. ramosus as D. caudatus appears to be much more rare.
