Species Description
Widespread but scattered and uncommon throughout the lowland parts of the UK. It is most common on the Eastern and Southern parts. Habitat includes: Humus rich soils in places such as open woodland, grassland, scrub, parks, gardens, churchyards, roadside verges etc. Growing habit: Tuberous Perennial. Flowers: January to March. Height: Up to 10 cm. Other names include: Winter Hellebore, Winter Wolf's-bane. Introduced as a garden plant by 1596. It has become thoroughly established in parts of Britain and was first recorded in the wild in 1838. Native Southern Europe from Italy to Bulgaria and Turkey.
