Species Description
Widespread and scattered throughout the UK. It is commonly grown in gardens and may escape. Habitat includes: woodland, hedgerows, copses, gardens, allotments, parks, cemeteries etc. Growing habit: Bulbous Perennial. Height: Up to: 20cm. Flowers: December to March (mainly January to February but can be as early as November). It was cultivated by 1597 and was first recorded in the wild in 1778.

Stems to 20cm; leaves 5-15 x 0.4-1(1.5)cm at flowering, flat, linear, wholly glaucous; outer tepals 12-25mm; inner tepals 5-12mm, with green patch at apex only; often flore pleno; (2n=24-28, 36, 48). Neophyte-naturalised; woods, damp grassy places, banks and streamsides; scattered throughout British Isles except North West Scotland and West Ireland; Europe.
