Species Description

Widely grown in gardens and may escape. Growing habit: Perennial. Flowers: May to June. Height: Up to 70 cm. Other names include: ChiloƩ Avens, Chilean Avens, Double Bloody Mary, Grecian Rose.

Geum quellyon Sweet (G. chiloense Balb. ex Ser. nom. inval.) - ChiloƩ Avens.

Stems to 70cm, erect; stipules mostly <1cm; flowers erect, sometimes flore pleno; petals patent, 8-15mm, usually bright red, sometimes copper-coloured or yellow; achenes in more or less sessile slightly elongated head, with styles hairy and glandular near base; receptale hairy; (2n=70). Neophyte-survivor; grown in gardens, rarely persistent on rough ground and tips, more often casual; scattered in England and Scotland, Isle of Man; South America.

  • Flowers erect to laterally directed; petals scarcely clawed at base; ripe achenes more or less sessile in flower centre
