Species Description

Fairly common and widespread throughout the UK. Habitat includes: railway banks, hedge banks, woodland margins, roadside verges, wasteland etc. Other names include: Symphytum x uplandicum. Flowers start off pink but soon becoming blue / violet. Flowers: June to August (I've see it flower in May). Height: Up to 2 m. Perennial. Introduced as a forage plant in 1870 and was widely cultivated in Britain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, first recorded from the wild by 1884. Two cytotypes occur (2n=36 and 2n=40). It is native to the Caucasus.
