Species Description

A native of the Mediterranean; sometimes planted for ornament and escapes and becomes naturalised in the southern half of the UK. Habitat includes: roadsides, railway banks, old quarries, wasteland etc. Other names include: French Broom, Cape Broom, Canary Broom.

Genista monspessulana (L.) L.A.S. Johnson (Cytisus monspessulanus L., Teline monspessulana (L.) K. Koch) - Montpellier Broom.

Stems not spiny, erect, to 2(3)m; leaves ternate, hairy, obovate, petiolate; flowers 9-12mm, in lateral clusters, sparsely silky-hairy on keel; fruits 15-25mm, densely hairy, 3-6-seeded; (2n=48). Neophyte-naturalised; on banks, roadsides and rough ground; scattered in British Isles, mainly South England; Mediterranean.
