Species Description

Stace 4:

Galanthus elwesii Hook. f. (G. caucasicus auct. non (Baker) Grossh.) - Greater Snowdrop.

Stems to 25cm; leaves 5-30 x 0.6-3cm at flowering, inrolled, hooded at apex, oblanceolate, wholly glaucous; outer tepals 15-30mm; inner tepals 8-13mm, with green patches at base and apex or at apex only; (2n=24). Neophyte-naturalised; commonly grown in gardens, naturalised in woods and damp grassland; very scattered in Britain North to Moray (mainly South England), County Waterford; South East Europe to Caucasus.
