Species Description

Commonly planted throughout the UK and may persist.

Stace 4:

Tulipa gesneriana L. - Garden Tulip.

Stems to 60cm; leaves elliptic to narrowly so, ≤35 x 8cm; flower 1; tepals variously yellow to red, pink, purple or white, often with basal black to white blotch inside, 4-8cm; (2n=24, 36, 48). Neophyte-survivor; the common garden tulip, some cultivars are persistent on tips, waysides and rough ground where discarded; scattered in most of British Isles; garden (?hybrid) origin.
