Species Description

Widespread but local throughout the Southern half of the UK where it is restricted to coasts. Inland and elsewhere it is scattered. Habitat includes: sea-walls, beside brackish ditches, tidal river banks, drift lines, uppermost parts of saltmarshes, disturbed marshes, pond margins, ditches, gravel-pits etc. Growing habit: Biennial / monocarpic (flowers once then dies) Perennial. Height: Up to 1 m. 1 subspecies and 2 varieties: Apium graveolens subsp. graveolens (0 records), Cultivated Celery (Apium graveolens var. dulce), Celeriac (Apium graveolens var. rapaceum). It is in declined.
