Species Description
Widespread and fairly common throughout the UK, especially around coasts. Habitat includes: Places with infertile, well-drained calcareous soils such as rough grassland, chalk downs, roadsides verges, railway banks, quarries, chalk / gravel-pits, wasteland, coasts, cliff tops etc. Growing habit: Annual / Biennial. Flowers: June to August. Height: 30 - 60 cm. Other names include: Bird's-nest, Bishop's Lace, Queen Anne's lace. There are several stories as to why it is named 'Queen Anne's lace'. Most revolve around King James I's consort - the Queen Anne in question - who is said to have pricked her finger and stained some lace with a drop of blood (Wild Carrot's single red flower surrounded by frothy white blossom is quite evocative of this tale).
