Species Description
Widespread and frequent throughout the UK but often scarce and local and often planted. Habitat includes: ponds, lakes, dykes, canals and slow-moving rivers. Growing habit: Perennial. Submerged to a depth of 3 m. Flowers: July to August.

Ssp. alba. Leaves 9-30cm; flowers 9-20cm across, opening wide; pollen-grains usually with projections of varying lengths; stamens borne almost to top of ovary and leaving scars to top of fruit; stigmatic rays usually >14; fruit usually obovoid; 2n=84. Throughout British Isles, but absent from several areas and replaced by ssp. occidentalis in parts of North and West.
