Species Description

Widespread and locally frequent along coasts throughout the UK. Habitat includes: sand-dunes, shingle beaches.

Stace 4:

Cakile maritima Scop. (C. edentula auct. non (Bigelow) Hook.) - Sea Rocket.

Stems procumbent to more or less erect, to 50cm; leaves more or less glaucous, more or less succulent; fruit 12-25mm; proximal segment 4-9mm; distal segment 8-20mm, ovoid; 2n=18. Native; near sea drift-line on sand and sometimes shingle; around coasts of British Isles. Variable in leaf- and fruit-shape, even in our plants, which are all referable to ssp. maritima. Records of C. edentula from British Isles were errors.
