Species Description
Widespread but restricted to Coasts throughout the UK. Being most common in North West Scotland and the Orkney Islands. Habitat includes: saltmarshes, brackish grazing marshes / salt sprayed grassland, coastal / estuarine saltmarshes, flushed coastal rocks, Sea sprayed cliff edges, banks of tidal rivers, brackish pastures, flushed turf on calcareous clay, salt-treated roads. Growing habit: Rhizomatous Perennial. Height: Up to 75 cm. ID: Marsh Arrow-grass (Triglochin palustris) is similar but T. maritimum smells and tastes like Coriander when crushed. Other names include: Seaside Arrow-grass, Common Arrow-grass, Shore Arrow-grass, Triglochin maritima (Old name).
