Species Description
Rare. Very variable. According to Stace up to 8 native sspp. could make up our flora: T. arenarium Butcher, T. babingtonii Butcher, T. collinum Wallr., T. expansum Jord., T. flexuosum Bernh. (garden plant?), T. kochii Fr., T. majus Crantz, T. montanum Wallr., and T. umbrosum Butcher.
According to Kew only 4 are accepted (as sspp.) but only 2 are present in Britain. The rest are 'lumped' under ssp. minus and saxatile:
ssp. minus
(T. expansum, T. kochii, T. montanum are listed as synonyms) - the typical plant:
ssp. saxatile
(T. arenarium, T. babingtonii, T. collinum, and T. umbrosum are listed as synonyms) with glaucous leaves and dense stalked glands on the lowerside is a plant of dunes (I've recorded it in the North East along the coast at Crimdon):
nothosubsp. flexuosum
(T. flexuosum - Stace) (a hybrid between the above two sspp.) is thought to be referable to garden plants
GBIF and GBIF(as a synonym of ssp. minus)
subsp. majus
is not present in Britain according to Kew.
