Species Description
Widespread but local throughout the UK. Most common in Wales. Habitat includes: Damp, shaded places, such as quarries, wasteland, rough, grassy places e.g. rough grassland, roadside verges, railway banks etc. Growing habit: Rhizomatous Perennial. Flowers: June to September. ID: Stems have 4 ridges (square cross section), but are not winged. Leaves have no (or very few) translucent glands, black glands on leaves, petals and sometimes sepals. 2 subspecies: ssp. maculatum, ssp. obtusiusculum.
ssp. maculatum
Sparsely branched, with the branches subtending an angle with the main stem of 30°, the leaves lacking transparent glands; the sepals 1.8 to 3 mm wide with the tip entire (not toothed), black glands on petals mainly as flat dots. Sparsely scattered over Scotland; rarer in England.
ssp. obtusiusculum
More branched, with the branches subtending an angle with the main stem of about 50° the leaves usually possessing transparent grands; the sepals narrower at only 1.2 to 2 mm wide with the tip toothed; black glands on petals mainly as flat lines. Much more common than ssp. maculatum and locally frequent. This sub-species is often treated as a separate species!
