Species Description

Stace 4:

Valerianella eriocarpa Desv. - Hairy-fruited Cornsalad.

Stems erect, to 15(40)cm; inflorescences compact; calyx 0.7-1.3mm, with a very short tube and usually 6 unequal teeth fruit similar to that of V. dentata; (2n=14, 16). Probably native; banks, grassland and rough ground; very scattered in extreme South England, Caernarvonshire and Channel Islands, probably decreasing; South Europe.

Key:

  • Calyx in fruit distinct, about 1/4 to nearly as long as rest of fruit
  • Calyx in fruit with short tube, with usually 6 teeth, >2/3 as long as rest of fruit, nearly as wide as fruit
