Species Description

Common and widespread throughout the UK. Habitat includes: Damp places with moderately fertile soil that is seasonally waterlogged such as wet grassland, damp meadows / pasture (rush pasture in upland areas), marshland, fens, flushes, bryophyte-rich springs, pond margins, river / stream banks, road side verges, ditches woodland etc. Other names include: Our Lady's Smock, Milkmaids, Fairy Flower, May Flower, Coco Plant. Flowers: April to June. Perennial. Height: Up to 50 cm. Named Cuckoo flower because it is said to open as the first Cuckoo arrives. Main food plant for the Orange-tip and Green-veined White Butterfly caterpillars.
