Species Description
Widespread but local in the UK especially the South-West. Where it is found it can carpet the forest floor. Habitat includes: woodland (particularly coppiced), and deep, rich leaf mould soil where it is directly parasitic on woody plants of which it obtains all of its nutrients from. It contains little to no chlorophyll. It parisatises Hazel but also Common Alder, Sycamore, Beech, Yew, Elm's etc. Flowers early in the year from March to May Depending on location. It will flower earlier in the South and later in the North. In Bristol, Leigh Woods it normally starts to flower very earlier from Mid-March this is due to the fact that the Avon gorge, Downs, and Leigh Woods area has a micro climate and is on average 1 degree Celsius warmer than the surrounding area.
