Species Description

Widespread and locally common throughout the UK. Habitat includes: Still to slow-flowing waters in places such as ponds, lakes, ditches, dykes, rhynes, streams, rivers, canals, swamps etc. It has a very wide ecological tolerance, growing in oligotrophic to eutrophic and base-poor to base-rich water over a wide range of substrates. It can grow in shallow waters, or in water over 5 m deep. It is most frequent at moderate depths of 1-2 metres. Growing habit: Rhizomatous Perennial. Flowers: May to September.

Potamogeton natans L. - Broad-leaved Pondweed.

Floating leaves opaque, elliptic to ovate-elliptic, ≤10(14) x 4.5(8)cm, very rarely 0; submerged leaves opaque, linear ≤3.5mm wide, often very long, rounded at apex, sessile; fruit 3.8-5mm; 2n= about 52 (42, 52). Native; lakes, ponds, rivers, ditches, usually over rich soils; frequent throughout British Isles.

Key:

  • Floating leaves with distinct hinge-like joint at junction with petiole; submerged leaves (if present) <3.5mm wide
  • Stipules mostly >5cm; leaves actually blade-less petioles, opaque, without obvious midrib
